Trump Rehires Neil Jacobs, former Noaa boss, who is involved in “Sharpiegate”

President Trump has nominated Neil Jacobs to lead the national ocean and atmosphere again, one of the leading centers for climate sciences in the country and the goal of proposals for deep cuts of republican groups.

Dr. Jacobs was the reigning director of the NOAA in the first Trump government when Mr. Trump claimed in summer 2019 that Hurricane Dorian would meet Alabama. After a Noaa meteorologist in Alabama was posted on social media that Dorian Alabama would not influence, Mr. Trump’s employees ordered the NOAA leader to say that the meteorologist was wrong or the risk of dismissal was at risk.

Dorian has not reached Alabama. Dr. However, Jacobs bowed to this pressure and published an explanation that the posting of his Weather Office in Alabama described as “was not available with the probabilities of the best predicted products at the time”. An investigation of the incident later Dr. Jacobs back and said he had violated the agency’s ethics code.

The episode received the nickname “Sharpiegate” after Mr. Trump showed a map of Dorian’s probable effects. The card had been changed with a Sharpie pen to expand this impact area to Alabama.

These events led some to the nomination of Dr. To criticize Jacobs.

“While Dr. Jacobs has relevant specialist knowledge and references, he has already proven that he cannot lead the NOAA by not maintaining scientific integrity with the agency,” Rachel Clleetus, the political manager for the climate and energy program at the Union Of affected scientists, said in an explanation.

Despite the episode, Dr. Jacobs in the agency generally respected where the climate research was largely affected by Mr. Trump during the first term of office, and the congress resisted the calls of the President to reduce the financing of NOAA.

The question that Dr. Jacobs and the entire NOAA look at it is whether Mr. Trump will move more aggressive during his second term to change the agency.

Project 2025, the blueprint for a Republican administration produced by the Heritage Foundation, called Noaa “one of the main drivers of the alarm industry of climate change” and said the agency was to be dismantled. It was written by many people who have now held a high -ranking roles in the new Trump administration.

“Neil knows that America uses NOAA’s products every day,” said Craig McLean, a career officer who was the chief scientist of the agency during the first term. “His last term showed the limits of good will against political bullying.”

Mr. McLean added: “I wish him all the best for a difficult situation.”
