Trump treats Latinos as an enemy, says Lula | policy

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva accused the American Donald Trump yesterday that he had treated Latinos as an “enemy”, even after the population of the region “built up American prosperity”. The criticism came to Brazil during the state visit by the Chilean President Gabriel Boric. During the same ceremony, the Brazilian leader Mr. Boric invited to participate in the Brics summit, a strategy that aimed at strengthening regional integration.

“It is important for us to seriously discuss this topic of democracy and integration (in Latin America). We have to use them (integration) to expand our countries. Why do we have no place like the Netherlands in South America?” Mr. Lula asked. “We all stay poor and want to go to the USA to get a better life. After building American fortune, a US president comes and treats Latin Americans as enemies,” he added.

Similarly, the Brazilian president argued that it was not in the interests of South America to enter a “Cold War” between Americans and Chinese.

“The United States has decided to create a discussion that is favorable for a protectionist policy, in contrast to everything that has (accordingly) to free trade (accordingly) since the 1980s. In other words, all languages about free trade and globalization, and suddenly nothing is worth it,” explains Protectionism, “said Lula.

In this matter, the president added that the hiring of a “page” in this dispute was not in the interest of the region. “I don’t want a cold war. I don’t want to choose between the United States or China. I want relationships with the United States. I want relationships with China. I don’t want to have a preference for the other. It is my business person who should have preferences, but I want to negotiate.

Mr. Boric is in Brazil this week for a number of bilateral meetings in the country. He and Lula used their meeting in the Planalto Palace to sign contracts and cooperation agreements in various areas of public and private sector.

During the meeting, Mr. Lula also expanded an invitation for Chile to take part in the Brics summit, which will take place in Brazil in July. The invitation comes when the Brazilian government heads the BRICS group this year and would like to take the opportunity to convince the participating nations to update their climate goals by November. Brazil is particularly interested in achieving positive results at the 30th UN climate change conference, Cop30, another event on Brazilian soil, this time in the Amazon capital Belém.

In the same speech, Lula asked Mr. Boric to convince other South American countries of the importance of greater integration in the region. At an evening event with managing directors, Mr. Lula campaigned for a regional block that resembled the European Union. “We cannot be surprised in South America,” said the Brazilian leader.

As an example of the South American integration, Mr. Lula confirmed the importance of the so -called “Biocean Corridor” or the “Biocean Route”, which would combine the Brazilian state Mato Grosso Do Sul with Sul with the Pacific, whereby the shipping time of goods from Brazil to China is shortened by up to 14 days. The Chilean President agreed to Mr. Lula on this topic.

The congress also maintains the project of the BioCean route project. Senator Nelsinho Trad (Social Democratic Party, PSD, by Mato Grosso Do Sul), President of the Senate Committee, met on Tuesday (22) with a delegation of the Chilenian parliamentarian to discuss the infrastructure project on Tuesday. “In times of crises and tariffs, we have to consolidate logistical alternatives that offer exports more competitiveness,” said Trad.
