Tschernobylkernkrnkraftwerk by explosion, says IAEO – DW – 14.02.2025

An explosion caused a fire overnight on the site of the former nuclear power plant in Chernobyl in northern Ukraine, said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEO) on Friday.

The agency said that the explosion had been reported in the new safe -with a dome that protects the remains of reactor 4.

It is said that no victims were reported.

“The radiation levels inside and outside remain normal and stable. IAEO continues to monitor the situation,” said the agency in an explanation of X.

Zelenskyy accuses Russian drone

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the explosion was caused by a Russian drone attack.

He said the fire had been deleted, but it was considerable damage to the protective dome of the position.

The IAEA boss Rafael Grossi said the incident overnight and the increase in military activities around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant emphasized “persistent nuclear security risks” in the Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“There is no room for complacency, and the IAEO remains with a high willingness to alert,” he said.

Chernobyl is the place of the worst nuclear disaster in the world, which began on April 26, 1986 with the explosion of the reactor number 4. The new secure restriction around the destroyed reactor was completed in 2018.
