UDOT plows prepare for peak season. This way you too can prepare your vehicle

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation sent dozens of trucks loaded with salt onto the roads as the winter storm hit this week. Most of the efforts took place on Monday night in the mountainous areas, where snow was already falling.

UDOT said it expects snowplows to be out in northern Utah at least through early Wednesday.

While some mountain passes require winter tires or chains, many people may not need winter tires. Tire experts say now is a good time to check the tread of everyday tires to make sure they’re safe to drive on snowy or slushy roads.

Dozens of plows will spend the next few days salting the roads. You’ll hit canyon roads where snow is expected to fall off and on through Wednesday morning.

“Winter tires are important depending on your car’s needs,” said Robert Christensen, owner of Intermountain Tire Pros in Herriman. “When you travel through the canyons every day; If you have to climb a few hills every day to get home, winter tires might be a consideration.”

Motorists can use the penny test to check tires or have the tread checked by a professional, but it’s crucial to check them somehow. Christensen also recommended regular maintenance like tire rotations to extend the life of car tires.
