Village People’s Victor Willis endorses Trump’s YMCA use

Founding member of Village People Victor Willis told Fox News that he supports the president-elect Donald Trump’s frequent use of their song YMCA despite his initial condemnation for seeing Trump “bring so much joy to the American people.”

Willis joined Todd Piro To Fox & Friends first on Thursday and said that the change in his attitude toward Trump through using the song was because he saw the impact it had.

“I have decided to allow the President-elect to continue using YMCA because he seems to really, really like the song and so many other artists have discouraged him from using their music,” he said. “So I decided to contact BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) and tell them not to cancel his license for political use because he seemed to be bringing so much joy to the American people with his use YMCA

In 2020, Willis called on Trump to stop using it YMCAbut also their hit Macho man. Willis noted Thursday that Trump’s use of YMCA had pushed it to the top of the Billboard charts even though it was decades old.

Willis even kept the door open to performing at Trump’s inauguration, although he said the band would be worried about giving the impression they were supporting the Republican. He explained that so far they have wanted to stay away from politics.

“If you asked me today if the Village People would perform at the inauguration, I would probably say no because we would be worried about support,” he said.

However, the artist added that the success they’ve had due to Trump would make them “seriously consider” performing at the event.

“The president-elect has done so much YMCA and brought so much joy to so many people, the song actually went back to number one, and it’s still number one today. “So if he were to ask the Village People to perform the song live for him, we would have to seriously think about it,” he said.
