Sambhal violence: Three people were killed and several others, including 24 police and administrative officials, injured in violence in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. The clashes occurred during a court-ordered tour of a Mughal-era mosque.

A mob threw stones at police and the survey team and set vehicles on fire. Police used batons and tear gas to bring the law-and-order situation under control. The Sambhal government has closed all schools from November 25 and blocked the internet to prevent rumors.

Meanwhile, the Sambhal government has banned outsiders, social organizations or public representatives from entering the city without permission.

  1. Moradabad District Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh told media that the miscreants fired bullets during the fracas. An officer was hit by a bullet. Around 20 security guards were injured. “The miscreants fired shots…The police commissioner’s PRO suffered a shot in the leg, the police constable was hit by bullets and 15 to 20 security personnel were injured in the violence,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
  2. Aunjaneya Kumar Singh said that a police officer suffered a serious head injury and the deputy collector fractured his leg. The Sambhal government disrupted internet in the tehsil area for 24 hours and closed all schools on November 25.
  3. The department head said the violence started when the investigation team left after completing the exercise. “There were groups on three sides. One from the front, one from the right and one from the left. They kept throwing stones. Police used force to ensure the survey team could be safely removed. Tear gas grenades were also fired. Plastic. “Bullets were used,” Singh added.
  4. Images shared on social media showed the mob throwing stones at police from building roofs and in front of the Shahi Jama Masjid. In an alleged clip, Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishan Kumar was seen asking Steinschläger not to indulge in violence. “Don’t ruin your future for these politicians,” he said.
  5. Krishna Kumar refuted reports that police fired on the mob. He said non-lethal shotguns were used. “The police used shotguns. No weapons were used that could take someone’s life,” he said.
  6. According to police, 21 people were arrested and several types of weapons were found. They also found bullet casings of different calibers. “Up to 21 people were arrested. Various types of weapons were recovered from them. Many shells of different calibers were recovered from the spot where the firing took place,” the official added.
  7. Police said they recovered weapons from the homes of those arrested. They also arrested two women in whose home there was a shooting. Those who indulged in violence would be booked under the National Security Act (NSA), officials told PTI.
  8. The deceased have been identified. “The death toll is three. The reason for the death of two of them is clear – gunshot wounds from country-made pistols. The reason for the death of the third person is not clear but it will occur after post-mortem examination,” District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya told PTI.
  9. A local court had ordered the survey of the Jama Masjid site in response to a plea alleging that the mosque was built on the ruins of the Harihar Temple. The survey could not be completed last Tuesday and was scheduled for Sunday morning to avoid affecting prayers.
  10. Gopal Sharma, a local lawyer for the Hindu side, claimed that the temple that once stood on this site was demolished by the Mughal emperor Babur in 1529.
