Watch out for SMS scams about unpaid tolls

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has been notified that a text message-based scam purported to charge toll booths across the country.

This scam, also known as smishing, involved demanding money for unpaid tolls.

MassDOT said the targeted phone numbers appeared to be selected at random.

Customers who receive an unsolicited text message, email or similar message should not click on the link, MassDOT reported.

EZDriveMA said that all links associated with their agency will include www.EZDriveMA.com.

This scam is part of a series known to the FBI.

If someone receives the scam message, FBI officials recommend the following:

  • File a complaint with IC3, www.ic3.gov. Be sure to include the phone number the text came from and the website listed in the text.
  • Verify your account on the toll service’s legitimate website.
  • Contact the toll service customer service phone number.
  • Delete any smishing texts you receive.
  • Once you have clicked on a link or provided your information, make every effort to protect your personal information and financial accounts. Deny any unknown allegations.

MassDOT said they encourage customers to remain aware of this type of scam and to contact www.EZDriveMA.com with any questions.
