During an interview on NBC Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Aired yesterday (November 28), the actress – who plays Elphaba opposite Ariana Grande’s Galinda – was asked if she thought it was okay for fans to sing along at screenings.

“Good. I’m okay with it,” she replied emphatically. “We’ve spent so long singing it ourselves – now it’s time for everyone else to sing along. It’s wonderful.” Watch the interview below ( skip to 1:21 for her answer).

Since Wicked’s release on November 22, the musical adaptation has breathed new life into the box office and racked up massive returns – a total of $270 million (£214.6 million) in ticket sales worldwide in its opening weekend.

However, social media users have since pointed out that cinemas have policies in place that prohibit audiences from loudly singing along to the film’s songs – separate “sing-along screenings” have been organized for this purpose.

Earlier this week, Dwayne Johnson was the first to convey his endorsement to the public: “Sing! You paid your hard-earned money for a ticket, went to a musical and loved it. Sing,” he said BBC News from the red carpet Moana 2 Premiere.

The film’s enormous popularity and the support of its more ardent fans have also led to other policies – such as the ban on green face paint, as one fan learned.

Review of the film, which stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo and is an adaptation of the stage musical that tells the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West The Wizard of Oz, NME gave it four stars and said that the “hit musical makes a gravity-defying leap to the big screen.”

“Funny, colorful and full of empathy for outsiders – this film is really shit,” it continued.

Bad part two The cinema release is scheduled for November 21, 2025. You can read everything we know about it so far here.
