Get ready to be stunning at Afrikin.

Alfonso Brooks: “Because you know what, it’s our 10th anniversary, so we’re taking this with a big (explosion sound), I want people to come into the building and be blown away like (explosion sound).”

Over at the Scott Galvin Community Center in North Miami, this week-long fair penetrates people’s hearts with this year’s theme.

Alfonso Brooks: “It’s called ‘Threads of Life and Fragment of Time.’ An amazing experience that talks about the interconnectedness of humanity, the cosmos, the underwater world and animals.”

They showcase fashion, sculpture and lots of visual art in three different parts of the center.

Alfonso Brooks: “We have curated 74 amazing artists presenting a variety of works that show the embodiment of their work and make you think, ‘Oh wow!'” And bring the checkbook. Don’t leave the checkbook at home. We are a non-profit organization. Come and support.”

The support for this one artist can be felt across the Atlantic.

Ndako Nghipandulwa: “I live in Namibia. I’ve never been to Miami. I’m very excited and nervous at the same time, but most of all excited. This is definitely the biggest event I’ve ever attended.”

And forget the brush. His main tool is a hammer.

Ndako Nghipandulwa: “It’s nails and threads, and I also started incorporating fabrics. Oddly enough, I like the work; It’s not something I can rush into. This is something I have to do slowly with my time, so it also makes me very patient. Even though I hit my hands a few times.”

This Trinidad and Tobago-based artist is all about lines.

Tavernelle Wells: “Thousands of strokes. I made layers of it and then built it up to create the final piece. I enjoy the process because my art is a kind of visual diary of my own experiences.”

And she is using this new experience.

Tavernelle Wells: “This is the first time we are exhibiting at the Afrikin Art Fair. This is a unique experience for me. It’s nice to get out and see other artists and celebrate them too.”

Alfonso Brooks: “South Florida needs an upscale black experience so people can come here and say, ‘Wow, I didn’t know this was in Miami.'”
