What is the weather like in the Northeast Ohio and Cleveland area?

(WJW) – A Snow warning due to lake effect has been extended until 7 a.m. Tuesday for Ashtabula and Lake counties and remains in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday for Geauga County.

A Winter Storm Watch applies to Cuyahoga and Geauga counties from Sunday afternoon to Monday evening.

A band of heavy lake effect snow oriented west to east is expected to dump a lot of snow in a short period of time. Snowfall rates within this band could range from 1 to 2 inches per hour. Whiteout conditions are expected to develop below the band. Crossing the snowbelt will be very difficult at times, particularly along the I-90 corridor.

Here’s a look at how much snow could fall by Saturday evening. Parts of Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties could see up to 2 feet of snow by the end of the weekend. South of the heavy lake effect snow band it will only be cold and windy.

Temperatures will drop to over 20°C on Saturday morning. However, a westerly wind at 10 to 20 mph will result in wind chills in the teens and single digits!

The band of lake effect snow will regularly meander north and south Saturday and Sunday. Wind direction will be key. Lake Erie is still about 54 degrees, On this day it is the warmest in over 30 years. This will be a LONG event with bands of snow moving back and forth from west to east until early next week.

Dry air from the west will weaken bands from time to time this weekend/early next week. From late Friday to early next week there will be a sharp boundary between heavy snow and light snow in the south.

Highs in the upper 20s and lower 30s this weekend. This will be the coldest 6-day period in late November/early December since 2010!
