What to know about the Alabama-Auburn rivalry

One of the fiercest rivalries in the South, in college football and even in American sports, Alabama versus Auburn, is a game where the records achieved no longer matter.

The interstate rivalry between the Crimson Tide and the Tigers, also called the Iron Bowl, includes some of the most dramatic games in college football history, including 1967’s “Run in the Mud,” 1972’s “Punt, Bama, Punt,” and ” Punt, Bama, Punt” from 1982, “Bo Over the Top”, “Wrong Way Bo” from 1985, “The Drive” from 2009 and “Camback” from 2010.

More recent entries in Iron Bowl history include “Kick-6” from 2013, which was joined last season by “Fourth-and-31,” when Jalen Milroe completed a 31-yard pass to the current Texas receiver Isaiah Bond completed to get it with 32 seconds left in the game, making the lead 27-24. Because of this performance, Alabama enters the 2024 edition of the rivalry with a four-game winning streak, its longest since nine straight wins from 1973 to 1982.

This will be Kalen DeBoer’s introduction to the rivalry, and he will try to uphold Nick Saban’s legacy: DeBoer’s predecessor took over an Alabama team that had lost five straight games to the Tigers and led the team after he left in 2007 After losing its first Iron Bowl, the Tide won 12 of the next 16 meetings with the Tigers, for an overall record of 12-5.

Why is Alabama-Auburn called the Iron Bowl?

Alabama vs. Auburn is actually called “The Iron Bowl” because there is a city neither team is currently playing in.

Birmingham, Alabama – the neutral site where the two teams played from 1893 to 1998 (with exceptions) – was one of the country’s premier industrial cities. Its main products were coal and, of course, iron. It was also a huge steel manufacturer that competed with its northern analogue, Pittsburgh.

That’s why the late Ralph Jordan – who coached Auburn from 1951 to 1975 – coined the term “Iron Bowl” when asked about the Tigers not playing in a bowl game in 1964. He replied, “We have our bowl game.” . We have it every year. It’s the Iron Bowl in Birmingham.

Although the game is no longer played in Birmingham, but alternately in Tuscaloosa and Auburn, the name has stuck.

Does the Iron Bowl have a trophy?

Alabama and Auburn will play for the Foy-ODK Sportsmanship Trophy, commissioned for the former Alabama And James E. Foy, dean of student affairs at Auburn. The ODK share comes from the Omicron Delta Kappa fraternity, which sponsored the purchase of the trophy.

The trophy is presented to the winner on their home court during the basketball game between the two teams (they play twice a year, once on each floor).
