Where was “The Inheritance” (2024) filmed? All filming locations explored

The legacy is a horror film released on July 12, 2024. The screenplay is by Chris LaMont and Joe Russo. The couple is jointly credited with creating the thriller films Soulmates (2023), The locksmith (2023) and Hard kill (2020).

The screenplay was adapted from the original screenplay by the duo of the same name The last will and testament of Charles Abernathy, which was listed as one of the best unproduced horror scripts in the Blood List of 2018.

The legacy directed by Alejandro Brugués and starring Bob Gunton, Briana Middleton, Rachel Nichols, Austin Stowell, Peyton List and David Walton. The film was originally intended for Netflix but was later distributed by Vertical.

The legacy uses an indoor setting to immerse you in a story full of twists and turns, with an underlying aura of menace. This is partly due to the spooky atmosphere that exists in the villa where the film was filmed.

Filming took place in the British Columbia region of Canada. Interestingly, the film was shot back in 2021 amid restrictions due to COVID-19.

1) Hatley Castle, Colwood, British Columbia

The film was largely shot at Hatley Castle, which served as Charles’ mansion. The size and age of the castle made it the perfect backdrop for the eerie events that unfolded throughout the film.

Hatley Castle is located on Vancouver Island in the British Columbia region of Canada. It has a rich history and was a significant monument in Canada’s military history, serving various purposes between 1943 and 1994.

According to their official website, the building is 200 feet long and 86 feet wide and features an 82-foot tower. It is now part of Royal Roads University and has served as a filming location for several films including: Dead Pool (2016).


2) Vancouver, British Columbia

Several scenes in the film are shot in Vancouver, one of Canada’s most vibrant cities, surrounded by mountains. It is a popular filming location and serves as a backdrop for several scenes in the film.


3) Victoria, British Columbia

Victoria, the capital of the province of British Columbia in Canada, was ideal to set the tone of the film. The city is known for its colonial architecture, including mansions.

The city also has several gardens and a seafront and is a hotspot for outdoor activities.


The legacy (2024): Plot

The legacy tells the story of wealthy businessman Charles Abernathy (Gunton), who invites his four children to his villa to celebrate his 75th birthday. Twins Madeline (Nichols) and CJ (Walton) are joined by their siblings Kami (List) and Drew (Stowell), as well as Drew’s wife Hannah (Middleton), as they reluctantly follow their father’s wishes.

However, once they arrive at the mansion, the estranged family experiences a shock when the patriarch announces his impending death at midnight. He also sets the terms of inheritance of his considerable fortune – his children must help him stay alive past midnight to inherit his fortune, or ensure that the family fortune is donated to charity.

The film then evolves from a mystery to a horror film. Due to Charles’ fear, a lockdown situation arises and thus increased security through bulletproof glass and sealed doors.

In an eerie turn of events, we see each of Charles’ children succumb to their deaths in different parts of the house amid emerging confusion and distrust.
