Who will run for the election in May?

Petitions that were elected to the Columbus City School Board have submitted through a dozen candidates, but none of the three incumbent with expiring conditions is among them and guarantees a shake of the board after November.

The Board President Michael Cole, who was selected for the top board role in January, announced on Thursday that he would not strive for a re -election. The current members Ramona Reyes and Christina Vera, whose terms run at the end of the year, also said that they are not striving for re -election.

Wednesday was the deadline for the submission of petitions for the area code of Ohio on May 6th, and 13 people submitted their petitions to run in the impartial prerequisite of the board. Cole, Vera, Reyes is not looking for a re -election

In a statement on Wednesday, Cole said that he was looking for no re -election, but provided no reason. In his statement, it is said that he will continue to concentrate on promoting the results of the students, strengthening the strengths of Columbus City schools, realigning academics in our assets and dealing with truth and strategy in order to make permanent improvements ” , while he ends his term.

“I am incredibly grateful for the trust and encouragement of the residents of Columbus on my entire time on the board,” said Cole in a statement. “I expand my best wishes to all candidates in the upcoming elections and look forward to seeing new leadership to serve our students.”

Cole has been a board member since 2014.

Reyes said the shipping, she was not looking for a re -election because her role recently changed in her work with Catholic charity organizations and she has to spend more time focusing on her new role in the organization.

“I have the feeling that for someone who has taken a position like a school board member, someone has to be someone who can devote time and commitment,” said Reyes.

Reyes is the longest -reigning board member in the school authority. When she was elected in 2008, she was the first Latina to be elected to the political office in Columbus.

“It was an honor for me to be on the board for the past 15 years, and I am grateful for the community,” said Reyes.

Vera, who acted as Board President in 2024, announced that she was not looking for a re -election to “focus on personal priorities”, including the time with the family.

“It was one of the most rewarding and humble experiences of my life,” said Vera. “I am incredibly grateful for the trust that the community has included in me, and for the privilege of working with committed colleagues to work for our students, families and educators.”

How does a primary school for Columbus School Board work?

The candidates must first certify their petitions, which confirms that they have 300 valid signatures of residents of the school district to appear in May.

Since there are three seats for election in the Columbus City School Board, the six top votes will be nominated in May in May and progress in the parliamentary elections, said Aaron Sellers, spoker for the Franklin County Board of Elections.
