Why Apple May Expect a Heavier Than Usual iPhone Update Cycle

Apple (AAPL) is releasing its iOS 18.2 update today. The update’s features include ChatGPT integration with Siri and the ability to create your own emojis.

Creative Strategies CEO and Principal Analyst Ben Bajarin sits down with Asking for a Trend Anchor Josh Lipton to talk about how the new iOS update could impact iPhone demand and sales.

“I think the term ‘supercycle’ is thrown around,” Bajarin says. “I mean, I just still firmly believe that hardware changes, design changes drive these supercycles, not software. I still think this is going to be a stronger upgrade cycle than normal just because we’ve known that this is an aging base.

Bajarin spoke about the partnership between Apple and Sam Altman’s OpenAI, the company developing ChatGPT.

“I think OpenAI is not Google. In no way, shape or form are they branded or used as widely as Google,” says Bajarin. “So you could see the differences in this deal between Google for search and ChatGPT and OpenAI for other features.”
