Why is selling raw milk illegal in Alabama? Member of ‘Secret Society’ Group Says Milk Pickup ‘Feels Like a Drug Deal’

If someone enjoys consuming raw milk, it will be difficult for them to stay in Alabama for a long time. Under state law, it is illegal to sell unpasteurized milk for human consumption, but it can be sold under the label as animal feed. However, many question why raw milk was banned in the state despite its nutritional benefits.

According to the FDA, raw milk contains pathogenic bacteria that may cause some degree of harm to human health. Consuming unpasteurized milk can endanger children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems, as they are most at risk for health problems.

The organization claims that the nutritional and health benefits of raw milk have not been scientifically proven. However, the risks of consumption are clear.

Since 1987, approximately 143 outbreaks of illness have been reported due to the consumption of raw milk contaminated with several pathogenic bacteria such as Campylobacter, Listeria, Salmonella and E. coli. Outbreaks have included miscarriages, kidney failure, stillbirths and even deaths.

Therefore, the FDA urges people to understand the risks of consuming unprocessed milk.

How do you buy raw milk in Alabama?

While raw milk is not a common product in Alabama grocery stores, there is a market in the state where it is sold to people.

According to the Alabama Political Reporter, a Facebook group called “Alabama Raw Milk” was created last year for people to buy or sell raw milk. So far there are 5.5 thousand members who are committed to consuming unprocessed milk.

Several group members shared with the outlet their reasons for purchasing this type of milk. A member named JD Duke said that drinking raw milk helped him eliminate elevated eosinophils in his blood, esophagus and gastrointestinal colon. He claimed that consuming milk naturally helped him relieve all his problems and avoid a flare-up.

Duke also emphasized that the law makes it difficult to get a bottle of milk in Alabama. He said it felt “like a drug deal” when he went to pick up his weekly milk.

“I am amazed that in a culture that normalizes the consumption of highly processed foods that are terrible for you, raw milk is demonized,” Duke added.

Another raw milk consumer said she was able to drink it despite being lactose intolerant.

However, members of the group believe things could change over time because Robert F. Kennedy is President-elect Donald Trump’s preferred head of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Kennedy was vocal about his need for milk. In a tweet, he said that he only drinks it in raw form. He began the tweet with “FDA’s war on public health is about to end” and criticized the organization.
