Wicked Faces Boycott by Angry Parents as Musical Accused of Pushing ‘Woke’ and ‘LGBTQ Agenda’

Conservative group One Million Moms has called for a boycott of the new film “Wicked,” claiming it promotes an “LGBTQ agenda” for families and children.

Although the name suggests massive support, only about 12,000 people have signed the organization’s petition urging parents to avoid the musical adaptation.

The group founded by the American Family Association – which has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center – criticizes what they describe as “not-so-discreet cross-dressing and men having crushes on men” in the film.

In their petition, One Million Moms raised concerns about the film’s supernatural elements, stating, “Of course, the musical contains a tremendous amount of witchcraft and sorcery.”

“And that content makes most parents not want to take their kids to see Wicked.”

The group claims that the film is not an “uplifting Broadway musical about friendship and family” but “a dark film that also promotes wakefulness.”

They particularly object to what they call “a blatant attempt by Universal to normalize same-sex crushes.”

The petition notes that parents may be surprised by the film’s content, which they say contains elements they “may not expect.”

The film features five main characters who identify as LGBTQ+, as opposed to One Million Moms’ claim of four.

Cynthia Erivo, who plays the lead role of Elphaba, is one of the queer-identifying cast members.

Jonathan Bailey, who is cast as Fiyero, is also part of the LGBTQ+ community alongside Bowen Yang, who plays the role pan.

The cast’s LGBTQ+ representation extends to Bronwyn James, who plays ShenShen, and Marissa Bode in the role of Nessarose.

According to One Million Moms this casting represented “an allusion to inclusivity,” which they see critically in their petition against the film.

Despite calls for a boycott, “Wicked” proved to be a notable box office success.

According to Deadline, the film has broken several box office records and sold over £320 million in tickets in the US.

As the conservative group continues its protest, the film has found widespread acceptance among moviegoing families.

“While One Million Moms doesn’t make room for this, many real families do,” industry reports say.
