Wife goes to get “groceries” and surprises husband with something else instead

Elaine Buhs told her husband she was on her way to the store but brought home something unexpected.

The plan was simple: a quick trip for essentials since the couple had returned from a trip to Florida. On the way home, however, Buhs made a detour to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, where she has been volunteering as a foster parent for more than a year.

When she got home, she had bread, milk and Buddy, a nervous 10-month-old Pyrenean mix.

Boos filmed their escapade and shared the footage on TikTok, where it has since received more than 430,000 views. “I told my husband I was going to the grocery store and then went to the animal shelter to pick up a foster dog,” she wrote in the video’s caption.

In the caption, she added: “Our shelter is becoming overcrowded with dogs so I decided to look for a foster home. Four beautiful dogs came in inadequately socialized. One was adopted and one was immediately taken into care. There were two left, so I took this nervous Nelly. I’ll lie with him all night and see how it goes.

When Buhs arrived at the Animal Rescue League, she had planned to look for a small puppy or the dog that most needed a break from the shelter. The foster care department referred them to Buddy, who was having problems at the shelter.

“They said there was a 10-month-old puppy that wasn’t doing well at the shelter,” Buhs said Newsweek. “He was very nervous and scared. They also said he would likely have to be carried out of the shelter. I thought, ‘Okay, I’ll take him with me.'”

It wasn’t until later, when she saw Buddy, that Boos realized what she had gotten herself into. “When the staff picked him up, I was surprised that he was the size of a small horse,” she said.

Buddy came from a farm where he was part of an unwanted litter of puppies, and his life was essentially devoid of human contact.

When they got home, Boos tried to lure the dog inside. After an hour and a half, she finally called her husband for help, and that’s when he realized his wife had returned home with more than just food.

His answer, she said with a laugh, was as dry as it was amused: “Did you get my lemonade?”

Buddy is getting used to his temporary home and Boos wants to help him gain confidence. She has seen progress with other foster families and hopes Buddy will soon be ready for adoption.

She said, “He will be adoptable once he gets over his nervousness.”
