Will Alabama football be in the CFP? Why Crimson Tide will make the playoffs

Alabama football won’t have another chance to add to its resume until its fate in the College Football Playoff is known.

Due to losses to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma, the Crimson Tide has the SEC Championship weekend off. But because of the anarchy of college football, Alabama remains in the running for one of 12 spots that would compete for a national championship.

With the final CFP lineup released on Sunday, here’s why the Crimson Tide will get one of those 12 spots.

Alabama football CFP predictions

In the penultimate CFP rankings before the final round was announced on Sunday, Alabama was ranked No. 11. In these rankings, Alabama would be seeded No. 11 and would play No. 6 Notre Dame in the quarterfinals against SMU.

Alabama, a three-loss team, finished ahead of Miami, with two losses, and SEC teams South Carolina and Ole Miss, with three losses. According to CFP Selection Committee Chairman Warde Manuel, none of these teams will play in a conference championship game. this order is “fixed”.

Prior to Tuesday’s CFP rankings, several networks, including ESPN, Sporting News and 247Sports, had the Crimson Tide at either No. 12 or No. 11 in the CFP.

Why Alabama football will make the College Football Playoff

Much of Alabama’s argument rests on the strength of its schedule.

That’s the first thing Kalen DeBoer turned to when asked after the Crimson Tide’s 28-14 win over Auburn what his opinion would be for the CFP selection committee, citing then-ranked wins over Georgia, Missouri and LSU and a South Carolina win that looked better and better every week.

That was what offensive lineman Tyler Booker quoted when asked about Alabama’s CFP chances after Auburn’s win.

“If you turn on the movie and feel like Alabama isn’t one of the top 12 teams in the country, I don’t know what you would define as the top 12 teams in the country,” Booker said on “The Next Round.” “The schedule we played, the talent we have on the team, I definitely think we’re one of the top 12 teams in the country. Our record may not be the greatest, but when Alabama comes to play, we are definitely one of the 12 best teams in the country.

According to ESPN, Alabama has the 10th best strength in the sport. All nine teams ahead of the Crimson Tide are likely CFP-bound, including SMU, which would secure a bid after an ACC Championship win.

Alabama also has three wins against teams currently ranked in the CFP Top 25 and six wins against bowl-eligible opponents.

That’s what Manuel cited when asked what separates Alabama at No. 11 and in the CFP group and Miami at No. 12 and out of the group.

“It really came down to Alabama being 3-1 against current top-25 teams and Miami being 0-1,” Manuel said on ESPN. “Alabama is 6-1 against teams over .500 and Miami is 4-2. Both had some losses that weren’t what they wanted from these games. But in the last three games, Miami has lost twice. That applies to us.” When we evaluated their work, we felt that Alabama had the edge over Miami.

Alabama is consistently the team with the highest three-loss record in this area. And that’s solely because of his record, which should allow the Crimson Tide to break into the CFP even if there are upsets on conference championship weekend.

When are the CFP rankings released?

The final CFP rankings will be released Sunday at 11 a.m. CT after the slate of conference championship games.
