Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma once again failed to score big as he was dismissed for just three points on the second day of the fourth Test match against Australia in Melbourne on Friday. It was another disappointing performance from Rohit, who scored just 22 runs in the last four innings. This has led to a lot of discussion about his future and a report by PTI says that there is a possibility that he may retire from the format after the ongoing series. According to the report, chief selector Ajit Agarkar is currently in Melbourne and it is possible that they will have a conversation about Rohit’s future.

The report also claimed that the popular belief is that Rohit will retire from Test cricket if India fails to reach the final of the World Test Championship (WTC). With the series tied at 1-1, the last two Test matches against Australia are particularly important for India and its WTC final dreams.

Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar raised concerns over Rohit Sharma’s declining reflexes and suggested that age could catch up with the Indian captain after his sluggish dismissal in the ongoing Boxing Day Test against Australia on Friday.

Gavaskar pointed out deficiencies in the 37-year-old’s footwork that became more evident during his struggles in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Rohit’s decision to return to the opening spot in the fourth Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, partnering Yashasvi Jaiswal and relegating KL Rahul to No. 3, failed to materialize.

Off just 12 deliveries, Rohit managed just three runs before falling to his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins in India’s first innings at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. When Rohit tried to turn a half-length throw into a short ball outside the offside, he missed the shot and sent a top edge to Scott Boland in the middle of the game. The shot, which Gavaskar described as an uncharacteristic error, underlined Rohit’s recent struggles against Cummins.

“That’s a shot he normally plays. The half-pull from the forefoot. I think he probably wasn’t sure whether he should do the right pull shot or not and ended up just trying to tap it like he did in catch practice. But.” “This is what happens when you have a gap, when you are 36, 37 years old and there is a long gap between playing cricket,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports about Rohit’s dismissal.
