Winter begins here this year

As Daylight Saving Time ends and the clocks “go back” each fall, it feels like daylight hours are getting shorter and shorter. That’s true.

Setting our clocks back an hour in November allows for more daylight on winter mornings, but also means night arrives more quickly. In December, the sun sets earlier each day, reaching its peak on the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice.

The winter solstice marks the first day of winter and ushers in colder weather and the holiday season. But daylight saving time isn’t to blame; is the tilt of the earth.

When is the winter solstice 2024?

In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs on Saturday, December 21st at 4:21 a.m. EST.

Winter solstice, explained

According to the National Weather Service, the winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year.

This happens because of the Earth’s tilt towards the Sun. The Earth is tilted about 23.5 degrees on its axis, and each solstice is determined by the amount of solar declination, or “the latitude of the Earth at which the sun is directly overhead at noon,” National Geographic reports. We experience two solstices every year: the winter solstice and the summer solstice.

According to the Smithsonian Science Education Center, the tilt brings the Northern Hemisphere to its furthest point from the sun on the winter solstice. This brings more darkness. Additionally, the sun appears lowest in the sky and gives off less heat and sunlight.

But don’t worry, as the days after the winter solstice go, the amount of daylight will increase. This leads to the summer solstice, the longest day and shortest night of the year.
