Winter blast pickleball tournament helps to bring more players into play

The University of Wisconsin-Superior’s tennis team teamed up on Saturday, March 8, with the Duluth Area Pickleball Association (Dapa) to organize its 2nd annual winter blast pickleball tournament.

More than 100 players gathered for the event, including people from the twin cities, other areas of Wisconsin and even Thunder Bay. The organizers of the event have set up courts in the Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse on the UWS campus.

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States, and with increased demand, the need for more dishes is clear. Part of the proceeds for the event should help to satisfy this need.

“There is definitely a lack of dishes in our region, especially the committed pickle balls. And so we were pretty late last night to insert all of these lines in the UWS Fieldhouse. So this is the purpose of actually collecting money to create more dishes in our region, which is really exciting, ”said Melissa Grover, Vice President of Dapa.

Another part of the proceeds also helps the UWS tennis team.

“It’s two here. We collect donations for our UWS tennis program. Today we are on our way to the spring holiday. Much of the registration fee fulfills the court costs and the costs for this Spring Break trip, ”said UWS tennis trainer Ceejay Schaffner.
