Salt Lake City, UT – A severe winter storm is bringing heavy snow to Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, creating dangerous travel conditions just before Thanksgiving.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm warnings for the entire region, with impacts expected through Wednesday. Utah’s mountains, including areas along I-80 and Mirror Lake Highway, could see up to 36 inches of snow. The Bear River Range in Idaho is forecast to see 6 to 12 inches, while the Sierra Madre and Snowy Ranges in Wyoming could see up to 24 inches. Wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour in some areas will further reduce visibility.

Residents planning to travel should prepare for delays, particularly on key routes such as I-80 in Utah and Wyoming and Highway 36 in Idaho. Traction laws may apply and motorists are strongly advised to carry emergency kits including food, water and flashlights.

According to the NWS, there will be less snow Wednesday evening, but temperatures will remain below freezing. Thanksgiving Day is expected to be dry but cold, with highs ranging from the mid-40s in the Utah valleys to the low 30s in Idaho and Wyoming. In the mountainous regions the freezing point will remain well below freezing and icy roads are likely to affect early morning holiday traffic.

The five-day forecast shows conditions improving after Thanksgiving and skies becoming sunnier through the weekend. However, the current storm is expected to disrupt many people’s Thanksgiving travel plans, especially those crossing mountain passes.

Travelers are strongly encouraged to check state-specific road condition updates via UDOT Traffic in Utah, Idaho’s 511 system, and Wyoming Department of Transportation resources. Avoid non-essential travel during the storm and use extreme caution if travel is essential.
