Wintry mix on Friday before possible snow on Sunday, Monday – NBC4 Washington

The start of 2025 is looking good for snow lovers.

Storm Team4 expects a wintry mix to bring light snow to the D.C. region Friday afternoon before heavier snowfall possible Sunday evening into Monday.

Here you can find out what is in the forecast so far and how the region is preparing for it.

Winter mix on Fridays

Meteorologist Jessica Faith said there was a chance of quick snow showers Friday afternoon. The Blue Ridge Mountains could see snow as early as midday, while the DC area is expected to see snow later in the afternoon. It will rain briefly before it snows.

Eastern Maryland can expect the same wintry mix just before sunset as the snow moves further east, Faith said.

However, there probably won’t be much snow on Friday. Faith said she expects a dust-off for the D.C. area.

The amount of snow is highest in the west. A winter storm warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday for some areas west of D.C

Chance of snow Sunday, Monday

After Friday’s light wintry mix with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s, a mostly sunny and cold weekend is ahead, Faith said.

Snow is expected to begin late Sunday and continue through Monday. A period of freezing rain, sleet and cold rain may occur which could impact snow amounts and impacts.

“Monday’s snow is shaping up to be a significant event that could result in snow accumulations, icy roads, reduced visibility and hypothermia,” Faith said.

Heavy, wet snow and ice accumulations could cause tree branches and power lines to collapse.

Storm Team4 will be keeping a close eye on the timing of the storm and possible snowfall amounts as we approach Sunday and Monday. The current weather forecast can be found on the Storm Team4 weather page.

Snow preparations are underway in DC, Maryland and Virginia

D.C. snow crews will begin pre-treating roads on all of the city’s snow emergency routes Thursday evening, said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Twenty-one brine trucks will pre-treat roads with a mixture of salt, beet juice and water from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday, Bowser’s office said in a news release.

The snow team will be working part of Friday from noon to midnight with 34 heavy plows working on highways, roads, bridges, ramps and other elevated structures. Ten pickup truck plows will work smaller roads, the release said.

Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) snow plow crews were seen preparing Thursday.

MDOT SHA says Maryland residents can track snowplows and trucks near them using this online tool, which shows where snowplows are located in real time.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews were also preparing for snow Thursday, the agency said on social media.

“Keep an eye on the weather forecast, check your emergency equipment and remember to plan travel around the storm, not during the storm,” VDOT said on X.
