With a Galaxy Z Flip FE, Samsung could finally make foldable devices mainstream

There’s been a lot of talk about this lately Samsung may launch a cheaper version of its clamshell device foldable phone – Enter the Galaxy Z Flip FE. Just recently, A reliable source left the same clue. So when several insiders say that, you have to assume there’s something to it, right? And honestly, I really hope they’re on the right track with this model. The foldable flip style models are super tempting to me (I know, that kind of girl, right?) and seriously, I have my eye on one. But let’s be honest – the prices for these things are pretty crazy (with a few exceptions). The latest The Galaxy Z Flip 6 starts at $1,100 in the US and is even more expensive in Europe.
And let’s be honest – at this price, the specs just don’t blow me away. I could easily get a much more powerful phone for less money – without all the folding magic, of course. So if these rumors turn out to be true and Samsung actually launches a cheaper Galaxy Z Flip FE, I think it’s definitely a smart move.

Why do I think it’s a smart move?

Because let’s be honest: There are people like me who would buy a flip-foldable just for fun. If Samsung can lower the price – think mid-range – I bet more people will take advantage of the foldable trend. Additionally, with the Razr series, Samsung would be better positioned to take on its biggest competitor in the space, Motorola, and fend off growing competition from Chinese brands. Take the Motorola Razr (2024) as an example. It starts at a significantly cheaper $699 compared to the galaxy ZFlip 6and yet the differences are not earth-shattering. Perhaps the most notable advantage that Samsung has over Motorola is the chipset – the ZFlip 6 rocks the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while the Razr makes do with the mid-range MediaTek Dimensity 7300X. But hey, at $699 you can’t really complain, can you?

And yes, there is also a more expensive Plus version of the Razr series, which makes it all the more logical for Samsung to bring a cheaper alternative onto the market.

If Samsung launches the Galaxy Z Flip FE, it could rival the Razr series while also grabbing a piece of the pie from emerging Chinese brands like Honor, whose Magic V Flip starts at just $690.

The key to achieving this lower price could lie in the chipset. According to rumors, the Galaxy Z Flip FE could come with Samsung’s homegrown Exynos 2400e, the same processor that powers the Galaxy Z Flip FE Galaxy S24 FE. Honestly, it makes perfect sense – why not use this chipset for the first budget foldable device?

In conclusion, a cheaper flip foldable could attract even more buyers to the Galaxy Z foldable range. It would help Samsung compete with budget foldable devices and show that its innovative technology isn’t just reserved for those willing to pay higher prices.

Maybe it’s time for foldable devices to become more affordable

When it comes to premium gadgets, Folding phones are still firmly in this category. They’re not exactly budget-friendly, and let’s not even get started on how expensive repairs can be. But ever since foldable devices hit the market, we’ve all been waiting for prices to come down – and maybe it’s finally happening. If Samsung releases a cheaper flip-foldable, it could set off a chain reaction and cause other brands to lower their prices to stay competitive. So who knows? We may not be far away from the moment when foldables like this are available galaxy ZFlip 6 are losing their “premium-only” status and becoming more commonplace in people’s hands.

And really, it’s about time. New technologies tend to be expensive when they first come to market, but over time costs tend to fall as production improves, supply chains streamline, and upgrades become standard. This is how it “should” work, at least in an ideal world.

Of course, we still don’t know how much cheaper the Galaxy Z Flip FE could actually be. Now all eyes are on Samsung to see how budget-friendly its first affordable flip-foldable will be.
