Woman arrested after car accident through Staton prison gate and escapes

ELMORE COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) – A woman is under arrest and faces multiple charges following a weekend incident at Staton Correctional Facility in Elmore, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

The incident occurred Saturday when prison security noticed a suspicious vehicle on state property, the ADOC said. ADOC K-9 agents eventually found the vehicle in Prattville after the driver crashed through a gate on the property and fled.

According to ADOC, two women were detained and one, Heather Young, was ultimately arrested. She was taken to the Elmore County Jail and charged with promoting prison contraband, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and criminal mischief.

ADOC said its investigators recovered a package containing contraband that was stuck in Staton’s perimeter fence. The exact contents of the package were not disclosed.

Young’s bail is set at $45,000.

An investigation by the ADOC Law Enforcement Division is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
