Women blame Trump’s election for their decision to get sterilized

These women are willingly undergoing surgical procedures to make themselves infertile – all because Donald Trump won the election.

The women who speak proudly of their decision say they fear a crackdown on reproductive rights under a second Trump administration.

Newsweek recently spoke with several women who said they are resorting to invasive, irreversible medical procedures to ensure their reproductive freedom remains intact.

“If I am denied any rights in the next four (or more) years, I will not give them up without a fight,” said Lydia Echols, 28, a Texas woman who is making plans for a bilateral salpingectomy — a procedure in which… Your fallopian tubes will be removed.

An unidentified 39-year-old who had just undergone the procedure told the outlet that she felt she had no other choice after the election results.

“I’m not happy that I felt forced to have surgery because I didn’t want to change my body. I feel like the election has tied my hands and forced me to undergo sterilization – that’s terrible.”

Another woman – who said she and her husband both never wanted children – described her decision in language straight out of a dystopian novel and the television series “The Handmaid’s Tale,” in which women are second-class citizens.

“I have paid far too much attention to the hate Trump spewed over and over again during his last term in office… and am acutely aware of the people he keeps around him and in his ear, all of whom view women as breeding grounds and possessions seem to have to be subdued,” she told the outlet.

She had preemptively scheduled her sterilization appointment for October, claiming she “fully planned to cancel the surgery the day after the election, assuming Kamala wins.”

When the woman described her choice to Newsweek, she used language that suggested the elective surgery was forced on her.

“With Trump’s victory, we quickly learned that the decision to cancel the surgery was taken away from me,” she said. “This is not a desired procedure, but a necessity due to the politics and subjugation that is coming our way.”

In a post on the Childfree subreddit about the Newsweek article, women praised their decision to be sterilized at the age of 21 – some made extreme claims that are now anchored in reality.

“Well, if you pass laws that murder women on a regular basis, what are you going to do?” wrote one Reddit user, without elaboration.

“I really want to get sterilized, but I don’t have the money and I don’t want this procedure to show up on my parents’ insurance,” lamented another.

Other women are coping with Trump’s dominant election victory with a good old-fashioned sex strike.

On TikTok and to men.

Others have even resorted to shaving their heads to signal some kind of vague anti-patriarchal sentiment or to encourage their viewers to ditch their Trump-supporting husbands or boyfriends.

The movement was widely mocked online, with some – including women – questioning the participants’ sincerity and sanity or calling their attention-seeking behavior “disgusting.”

“Perfect. “Evolutionary dead ends cut off their own branches,” one X user remarked disparagingly.

“Sounds like they need lobotomies instead,” joked another.

“Nothing says defeat like eliminating yourself from the gene pool,” another poster wrote.

Trump has sent mixed signals about his support for abortion rights — at times boasting that he helped bring about Roe v. Wade was repealed — but he has also repeatedly vowed that he would not support a federal abortion ban, even threatening to veto it if it came to his own desk.

“I would not support a federal abortion ban under any circumstances and would even veto it because it is up to states to decide based on the will of their voters (the will of the people!),” Trump wrote on Truth Social in October .

Future first lady Melania Trump also made her strong support of abortion rights known in a clip posted on social media to promote her memoir, “Melania.”

“Individual freedom is a fundamental principle that I protect,” said 54-year-old Melania. “Without a doubt, there is no room for compromise when it comes to this fundamental right that all women have from birth,” she continued.

Meanwhile, the number of abortions has actually increased slightly since Roe v. Wade was overturned, which experts say is due to the greater availability of abortion pills by mail.
