Women’s fencing wraps up busy NFC weekend at Brown University

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (November 24, 2024) – For the second straight day of Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) play at Brown University, the Jumbo women’s team won twice and lost three on Sunday.

The Jumbos, ranked No. 5 in the US Fencing Coaches Association preseason poll, lost to No. 6 Wellesley College and No. 1 MIT by identical scores of 16-11 earlier in the day. Another setback to No. 7 Denison University (15-12) followed wins over Wagner College 16-11 and Sacred Heart University 20-7.

Denison was a visiting team at the NFC meet, so this result does not count toward the conference record. Tufts split its four NFC games on Sunday and was 5-4 overall in the conference.

In the win over Wagner, Tufts had 7-2 records in foil and sabre. Leah Levi in foil won all three of her fights while Saanvi Kapoor And Sophie Guan both won twice. Nitika Subramanian, Olympe Jean And Millie Girardi each won twice in the saber against Wagner.

The Jumbos won all three divisions in their victory over Sacred Heart. Guan in foil, Karen Bei in epee and Jean in saber all had 3-0 records.

The highlights of the defeats include two wins each for Levi in ​​foil, Bei in épée and Anat Katz And Anahat Bawa in the saber against Wellesley. The Jumbos defeated Saber 6-3 in the contest. Levi was 3-0 in foil against MIT, while Guan won twice and helped Tufts go 6-3 in that arms category. Bei had three victories in the epee, while Bawa took two in the saber against MIT. A 5-4 victory in foil against Denison included two wins from Kapoor and Guan. Bei in the epee and Jean in the saber also won twice.

Bei continued to win regularly, leading Tufts with a 12-3 mark (.800) on Sunday. Levi was outstanding in foil at 10-3 (.769), while Guan won two-thirds of her matches (10-5). A 7-2 mark (.778) from Jean led the Jumbos in saber, where all five fencers had winning records.

Tufts will conclude its first semester of action at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday, December 8th.
