Women’s singles predictions with Jasmine Paolini vs. Wei Sijia, Anna Kalinskaya vs. Kimberly Birrell

There will be more first-round action on the Melbourne courts on day three of the 2025 Australian Open. Some of the top seeds in both the men’s and women’s ranks are still on trial and will begin their campaigns on January 14th.

Fourth seed Jasmine Paolini will be the highest seed in action on day three. She will also be joined by fifth seed Elena Rybakina, eighth seed Emma Navarro and ninth seed Daria Kasatkina, who will also be in action on Day 3.

Let’s take a look at some of the women’s singles matches scheduled to take place on day three of the 2025 Australian Open.


#8 Veronika Kudermetova vs Olivia Gadecki

Veronika Kudermetova will begin her campaign against home favorite Olivia Gadecki at the Australian Open. So far in 2025, the Russian has a 2-2 record. She reached the quarterfinals of the Hobart International, losing 1-6, 6-0, 2-6 to eventual runner-up Elise Mertens.

Olivia Gadecki’s 2025 season has not started well as the Australian has lost all three games so far. She lost to Nadia Podoroska and Katie Boulter in the United Cup. At the Adelaide International she lost in the first round 2-6, 3-6 to Daria Kasatkina.

This will be the first match between the two players on the WTA Tour. Kudermetova will have a slight advantage as a higher ranked player.

Predicted winner: Veronika Kudermetova.


#7 Dayana Yastremska vs. Mayar Sherif

The last seed, 32nd seed Dayana Yastremska, will begin her Australian Open season with a first-round match against Mayar Sherif. So far, 2025 has been average for Yastremska. She lost 5-7, 4-6 to Anastasia Potapova in the first round of the Brisbane International. She reached the quarter-finals of the Hobart International, losing 5-7, 4-6 to eventual champion McCartney Kessler.

Mayar Sherif has only played one match before the Australian Open this year. She lost 57-4, 6 to Anna Bondar in the first round of the Hobart International.

The two players have never played against each other. However, Yastremska was a semi-finalist in Melbourne last year and will therefore be ahead in the upcoming game.

Predicted winner: Dayana Yastremska


#6 Katie Boulter vs Rebecca Marino

22nd seed Katie Boulter will open her Grand Slam season with a first-round match against Rebecca Marino at the Australian Open. The British player had a decent showing at the United Cup, winning her group games against Nadia Podoroska and Olivia Gadecki. However, she lost the quarterfinals 7:6 (4), 4:6, 1:6 against Iga Swiatek.

Rebecca Marino played in the ASB Classic before coming to Melbourne. She reached the second round and lost 6:7 (2), 4:6 to Bernarda Pera.

Boulter has won both games against Marino, the last of which was a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Canadian at the 2024 Nottingham Open. This makes the Brit the favorite for the upcoming match.

Predicted winner: Katie Boulter


#5 Daria Kasatkina vs. Viktoriya Tomova

Ninth seed Daria Kasatkina begins her 2025 season in Melbourne in the first round against Viktoriya Tomova. Kasatkina has a 3-2 record so far in the 2025 season. The Russian’s best performance came at the Adelaide International, where she reached the quarter-finals. She lost 1-6, 3-6 to Madison Keys.

Viktoriya Tomova has lost both games so far in 2025. She lost 0-6, 3-6 to Renata Zarazua in the first round of the Brisbane International and lost 5-7, 3-6 to Greet Minnen in the first round of the Hobart International.

These two players have never played against each other before, but as the higher seed, Kasatkina will be the favorite to win the game and advance to the next round.

#4 Maria Sakkari vs. Camila Osorio

Maria Sakkari, former top 10 player and number 31, will face Camila Osorio in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open. Sakkari didn’t have a good start to 2025. She lost both games at the United Cup to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Elena Rybakina. At the Adelaide International she entered the main draw as a lucky loser, but lost 4:6, 1:6 to Jessica Pegula.

Camila Osorio played at the Hobart International before coming to Melbourne. She reached the second round and lost 4:6, 1:6 to Veronika Kudermetova.

Sakkari has won both times she has played against Osorio, the last of which was a victory by retirement when the Colombian forfeited her match at the 2023 San Diego Open. The positive duel makes the Greek player the favorite for the upcoming game.

#3 Ons Jabeur vs. Anhelina Kalinina

Former world No. 2 Ons Jabeur begins her 2025 Australian Open season with a first-round match against Anhelina Kalinina. The Tunisian has a 4-2 record this season, with a quarterfinal appearance at the Brisbane International. She lost the game 2:6, 4:6 against Mirra Andreeva.

Anhelina Kalinina had a great run at the Brisbane International, reaching the semi-finals. She won against the likes of Wang Yafan, Diana Shnaider, Yue Yuan and Kimberly Birrell. She lost 4:6, 3:6 against Polina Kudermetova.

Jabeur has won both games against Kalinina, the last of which was a 6-3, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (2) win at the 2023 Cincinnati Open. The Tunisian is also considered the favorite for the upcoming game.

Predicted winner: Ons Jabeur


#2 Anna Kalinskaya vs. Kimberly Birrell

13th seed Anna Kalinskaya will begin her season at the 2025 Australian Open in the first round against Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell. Kalinskaya has lost both games in 2025. She lost 3-6, 3-6 to Ashlyn Krueger in the first round of the Brisbane International and had to forfeit her first-round match against Belinda Bencic at the Adelaide International.

Kimberly Birrell started the 2025 season in a good mood. She reached the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International, losing 6-4, 1-6, 5-7 to Anhelina Kalinina. The Australian player won three games in a row against Sara Saito, Priscilla Hon and Oksana Selekhmeteva to qualify for the main draw.

This will be the first game between the two players. As the higher seed, Kalinskaya will be the favorite.

#1 Jasmine Paolini vs. Wei Sijia

After reaching two major finals last year, fourth seed Jasmine Paolini will begin her 2025 Grand Slam campaign against Wei Sijia at the Australian Open. The Italian player was at the United Cup and won her second round matches against Chole Paquet and Belinda Bencic. However, she lost in the quarterfinals 2:6, 2:6 against Karolina Muchova.

Wei Sijia reached the final of an ITF event in Canberra in 2025, losing 4-6, 3-6 to Aoi Ito. In Melbourne, the Chinese player beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Tamara Korpatsch and Nina Stojanovic and qualified for the main draw.

The two players have never played against each other and Paolini will be the favorite as the top seed.
