Uncanny X-Men (1963) #266; Gambit uses his charm and hypnotic voice to stop the villains

Gambit is known for his ability to charge objects with kinetic energy and detonate them, but he can also use his kinetic energy in other ways, such as creating a static field to protect himself from psychics and by making hypnotic sounds created in his voice to hypnotize people. Although Gambit does not often display his psychic abilities, he has occasionally used them to stop psychics such as Psylocke from reading his mind. Other telepaths, like the villainous Shadow King, even have recognized Gambit’s hypnotic voice and telepathic abilities as a significant threat.

Gambit’s hypnotic tones, noted in his introduction, make telepathic powers one of Gambit’s oldest mutant abilities.

In Gambit’s first appearance – in Uncanny X-Men #266, by Scott Lobdell and Roger Cruz – Gambit uses his telepathic powers to slightly hypnotize the Shadow King and two dogs. A young Storm is surprised by his abilities and finds that the villains are drawn to Gambit’s words as if in a trance. Gambit’s hypnotic tones established in his introduction make telepathic powers one of Gambit’s oldest mutant abilities, and as Gambit now uses his powers to further the new wave of X-Men, this makes him twice as powerful and a formidable one Leader.

Gambit is undeniably a top-notch talker, but his minor psychic abilities and hypnotic voice play a large role in his charmmaking his psychic powers a fascinating secret weapon for the X-Men. An important aspect of Gambit that many overlook is how powerful Gambit originally was, as Gambit needed Mister Sinister to cut out a piece of his brain so he could control his abilities. If Gambit hadn’t weakened his powers, he could have posed an Omega-level threat, with absolute molecular control over kinetic energy and extensive telepathic powers.
