In Uncanny X-Men #6 – written by Gail Simone, with art by Javier Garrón – Calico, the new member of the X-Men, flies into a rage and knocks Wolverine unconscious. Gambit is the only one who can talk her out of it. When Gambit talks to Calico, he looks her in the eyes and gets her to admit that she is a mutant, although Calico usually insists that she is not.

Rogue explains that Gambit has a unique way of dealing with people, whether it’s charming them or getting under their skinwhich subtly hints at Gambit’s forgotten telepathic ability to make people agree with him.

Gambit is known for his ability to charge objects with kinetic energy and detonate them, but he can also use his kinetic energy in other ways, such as creating a static field to protect himself from psychics and by making hypnotic sounds created in his voice to hypnotize people. Although Gambit does not often display his psychic abilities, he has occasionally used them to stop psychics such as Psylocke from reading his mind. Other telepaths, like the villainous Shadow King, even have recognized Gambit’s hypnotic voice and telepathic abilities as a significant threat.

In Gambit’s first appearance – in Uncanny X-Men #266, by Scott Lobdell and Roger Cruz – Gambit uses his telepathic powers to slightly hypnotize the Shadow King and two dogs. A young Storm is surprised by his abilities and finds that the villains are drawn to Gambit’s words as if in a trance. Gambit’s hypnotic tones established in his introduction make telepathic powers one of Gambit’s oldest mutant abilities, and as Gambit now uses his powers to further the new wave of X-Men, this makes him twice as powerful and a formidable one Leader.
