‘Year-long process,’ local pecan company prepares for holiday season

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) – With the holiday season in full swing, the pecan harvest is at its peak and local businesses like Pecan Shed are feeling the pinch, literally and figuratively.

With the pecan harvest season in full swing, this family-owned business said it’s a year-long process to prepare for this holiday season, bringing us everything from fresh pecans to holiday treats.

“Our busiest time of year is November and December, and of course we get very busy right before Thanksgiving. And then, in December, everyone will be delivered. They want something sent to people out of state. I always say Georgia may be the largest pecan producer, but Texas is the best pecan producer,” said Jill Montz, manager of Pecan Shed.

Montz said what she believes sets the Pecan Shed apart from others in the area is that it is local to the region and features 1,000 acres and 2,500 trees planted in amazing soil in the small town of Charlie, Texas, just 20 miles from Wichita Falls, Red River.

She said her family has been harvesting pecans next to the site since 1981 and has become experts in the pecan industry. Knowledge is what ensures quality products year after year.

Montz said November and December are always the busiest time of year for the Pecan Shed as customers want everything in the shell, cracked or peeled and ready to go.

Wherever you are, the Pecan Shed is sure to have exactly what you need. Montz said one of the biggest problems is that people wait until the last minute for pecans to ship.

If you want to send products for Christmas, make sure you place your orders by December 10th.
